Certification study guide

How to study for the AWS Data Engineer certification.

The AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate (DEA-C01) is the first AWS cert built specifically for data engineers — not a solutions-architect exam with a data flavor. This is the study plan we'd give a friend: the four exam domains, the services you must know cold, a 6–10 week schedule, and where DataForge fills gaps.

The four exam domains

DEA-C01 tests four domains, weighted roughly as follows:

  • Data ingestion & transformation (34%) — Kinesis, Glue, DMS, Lambda, Step Functions, MSK, Data Pipeline.
  • Data store management (26%) — S3, Redshift, DynamoDB, RDS/Aurora, DocumentDB, Neptune, Lake Formation.
  • Data operations & support (22%) — CloudWatch, CloudTrail, EventBridge, SNS/SQS, Systems Manager, monitoring and cost.
  • Data security & governance (18%) — IAM, KMS, Macie, Lake Formation permissions, VPC endpoints, encryption in transit/at rest.

The exam is 130 minutes, ~65 questions, multiple choice / multiple response. Passing score: 720/1000.

The AWS services you must know cold

  • S3 — storage classes, lifecycle rules, versioning, event notifications, partitioning strategies.
  • Glue — crawlers, catalog, ETL jobs, DataBrew, Glue Studio, bookmarks.
  • Redshift — distribution & sort keys, Spectrum, Serverless, RA3 vs DC2, materialized views.
  • Kinesis — Data Streams vs Firehose vs Data Analytics; shards, KPL/KCL, retention.
  • EMR — cluster types, Spark vs Hive, EMR Serverless, EMR on EKS.
  • Lambda + Step Functions — event-driven ETL patterns.
  • Lake Formation + IAM — fine-grained access control on the lake.
  • Athena + Glue Catalog — federated queries, partitioning, workgroups, cost control.

A 6-week study schedule

  1. Week 1 — Storage & Ingestion. S3 deep dive, Kinesis, DMS. Build one hands-on lab: stream events → Firehose → S3 → Athena.
  2. Week 2 — Transformation. Glue jobs, EMR, Lambda ETL, Step Functions. Lab: Glue job that reads S3, transforms, writes Parquet.
  3. Week 3 — Warehousing. Redshift, Spectrum, materialized views, distribution keys. Lab: build a small star schema in Redshift Serverless.
  4. Week 4 — Operations. CloudWatch, EventBridge, cost monitoring, SNS alerts, orchestration patterns. Lab: end-to-end DAG with alerting.
  5. Week 5 — Security & Governance. IAM policies, Lake Formation, KMS, encryption patterns, VPC endpoints.
  6. Week 6 — Practice exams. Take three full practice exams. Review every wrong answer until you can explain why each option is right or wrong.

How DataForge fits into the prep

DataForge is not an AWS-specific bootcamp — but the fundamentals it drills (SQL, dbt, Airflow, Spark, Kafka, Iceberg, Docker, Terraform) map directly onto how the DEA-C01 asks you to think. If those fundamentals are shaky, no amount of "clicking through the AWS console" will save you at exam time. Use DataForge for the concepts; use AWS's own hands-on labs and Skill Builder for the service-specific muscle memory. Our Foundations, SQL, dbt, Spark and Kafka courses are the fastest way to build that base.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Only watching videos. This exam is scenario-based. If you haven't built one Glue job and one Kinesis stream, you'll guess on 20% of the questions.
  • Ignoring cost & performance questions. AWS loves "which is the most cost-effective?" phrasing — always eliminate the two most expensive options first.
  • Skipping IAM. Security domain is small but tricky. Make sure you can read an IAM policy and predict what it allows.
  • Cramming. DEA-C01 rewards familiarity with 20+ services. Space your study; don't sprint the last week.

FAQ

What is the AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate exam?
It's AWS's associate-level certification (code DEA-C01) that validates your ability to design, build and operate data pipelines on AWS — ingestion, storage, transformation, security and orchestration using services like Glue, Kinesis, S3, Redshift, EMR and Lambda.
How hard is the AWS data engineer certification?
Moderate. Easier than the Solutions Architect Professional, harder than Cloud Practitioner. Most engineers with 1–2 years of hands-on AWS data experience pass with 4–6 weeks of focused prep. Zero AWS background needs ~10–12 weeks.
How long should I study for the DEA-C01 exam?
Plan 60–100 hours of study spread over 6–10 weeks. That's ~1 hour/day plus one longer weekend session. Cramming a certification of this scope in under 3 weeks usually fails.
Is the AWS Data Engineer Associate certification worth it in 2026?
Worth it if you already work on AWS or are targeting AWS-heavy shops (most US enterprises). Not worth it if your target companies use GCP or Azure — pick their equivalent instead. In salary terms, the cert alone doesn't move offers much; the AWS skills behind it do.
What score do I need to pass?
AWS scales exam scores 100–1000; the passing mark for DEA-C01 is 720. You do NOT need to pass every domain — the scoring is compensatory, so weakness in one area can be offset by strength in another.
